Hidden regulations are strangling the life out of our economy even as they increase the cost of living for Michigan families. Regulations are everywhere—and it seems everyone must contend with them, from home-based “mom and pop” businesses to our big energy producers.

In 2015, police in Overton, Texas, shut down a lemonade stand run by 7-year-old and 8-year-old sisters. The girls hadn’t obtained a health permit required by Texas law to sell certain foods, including lemonade.

That’s just one example of government regulations run amok. The dizzying volume of rules implemented by unelected bureaucrats every year is nothing short of stunning. And the buck typically stops with you—the consumer.

At the federal level, the regulatory budget has tripled in size since 1990 and the number of rulemaking bureaucrats has increased by 84%, according to a report from the George Washington University’s Weidenbaum Center’s Regulatory Studies Center. Add to that state and even local regulations.

We must all care about making commonsense reforms to regulations that punish small businesses or protect well-connected corporations from competition.
