Government spending and debt are some of the biggest threats to our economic future. Unless we hold the line on spending, the cost of government will soon become unaffordable for families and businesses.

The problems facing Detroit illustrate the very real threat unaccountable and unaffordable spending pose to our state. Someone—and that someone is probably you—eventually has to pay for all that spending.

Michigan’s state budget grew by roughly $6 billion dollars over the past four years—from $47.6 billion in Fiscal Year 2011-12 to $53.5 billion for Fiscal Year 2015-16. Federal and state revenue restricted to certain spending programs eat up a large portion of the total budget, but General Fund appropriations alone are up by $1.5 billion.
