The Michigan House of Representatives is currently considering HBs 6047 and 6048, which would provide $88 million in state funding to build a new Capitol Welcome Center on the existing Michigan Capitol grounds. According to a 2014 Lansing State Journal article (the concept was originally proposed in 2014 and bills to fund it recently introduced), the upgrades would include a new cafeteria as well as committee and education rooms. The plans also include building legislators a new underground parking structure to replace the current surface lot behind the Capitol building, which would become an outdoor park.
