Michigan undertook massive changes to its business tax structure in 2011 …but our work is not done. It’s time to make Michigan’s tax environment more appealing for individuals too—that means reducing income taxes, holding the line on tax hikes, and stopping crony corporate tax carve outs.

Taxes should be simple, low and fair. That’s the best way to ensure people are not separated from the fruits of their labor. It’s also the best way to ensure government isn’t picking who wins and who loses.

Michigan citizens have faced a number of tax hikes over the past five years. In 2007, under then-Governor Jennifer Granholm, policymakers hiked the income tax rate from 3.9% to 4.35%. That increase was supposed to rollback beginning in 2011, but at a current rate of 4.25% this “temporary “ tax hike became a permanent increase of 9%.

Gas tax and vehicle registration fee hikes totaling $600 million were passed into law in 2015. They take effect in 2017. The tax on regular gas will go up by 7.3 cents-per-gallon (11.3 cents for diesel fuel). Registration fees will go up by 20%, or $20 based on the average registration fee for a passenger vehicle.
